Peaceful Sunset

Sunset on the beach, at Garrapata State Park, California

Another image from my trip earlier this week to the California coastline. This is sunset at a beach in Garrapata State Park, which is between Monterey (to the north) and Big Sur (to the south). The park is one of my absolute favorite spots to explore and photograph. I’ve been there several times over the last eight years or so, but had never been to one of its beaches. What a treat!

Photographers (me included) often hope for dramatic and colorful sunsets. That was not to be this time — but photography is a work-with-what-you’ve-got endeavor, which is what I did. And in this case, I really like that evening’s soft pastel colors, with a few reddish clouds on the right. Although it’s not colorfully dramatic, the image has — to me, at least — a peaceful and gentle feel, which I’m very happy with. It’s a nice reminder of a beautiful place at a special time of the day.

This was a four second exposure (thanks to a neutral density filter), catching a receding wave (and an approaching wave farther out). It was also a wet-feet and wet-pants-legs image — gotta get in close for a good wide angle composition!

I hope you enjoy it.
