Small Falls

A small falls along Cedar Run, in Shenandoah National Park, Virginiagg (Steve Sickels)

I live not too far from Shenandoah National Park, in Virginia. It’s a great place for a hike — and for photography! I particularly like its streams and waterfalls.

This image was taken along Cedar Run, which is one of my favorite places in park.  (Although, despite having visited the park many times over quite a few years, I’m sure that are great “new” spots that I haven’t yet seen…)

The day I took this photo, I did the White Oak Canyon / Cedar Run loop, starting out on the White Oak Canyon trail from a parking lot at the park’s boundary. (White Oak Canyon is more dramatic and popular, but I think I prefer the more intimate scenes along Cedar Run.)  It was very windy, and bright sun — neither of which is good for photos. But by the time I got to the upper reaches of Cedar Run, clouds were moving in. Yay! Time to pull out the camera! I’ve photographed this small falls before — it’s one of the first things you see when the loop trail reaches the upper reaches of Cedar Run — and was glad to do so again.

I like the lush greens, and the moss on the rocks. It’s a nice “little” place to visit. I hope you enjoy the photo.
