Blue and Brown

Sea Stacks at Garrapata State Park, California in the late afternoon. A one-minute exposure. (Steve Sickels)

And another image from my trip earlier this week to the California coastline. As with this image from the same trip, it’s from Garrapata State Park — one of my favorite places! I had taken images of these sea stacks on previous trips (here’s one that I like) — they’re particularly dramatic when hit by big Pacific waves! However, the waves were down a bit this time, and the sky a bit evenly cloudy. I thought I’d match the “feel” of the day with a long exposure (one minute) photo.  I also spent quite a bit of time searching for a composition in which the rocks in the foreground provided “leading lines” into the image, rather than just a jumble.

Also, in post-processing, I desaturated the image just a bit, to emphasize the gentle blues and browns and the softness of the smooth (long exposure) ocean.  Often photographers — myself included — boost the saturation (or better, the vibrance, in Lightroom) of images a bit to make them “pop.” But I’m recently influenced by some wonderful photographers that seem to head in other direction. (Mark Littlejohn, in particular,  is one of my favorites.)  I’m happy with the result. And hope you enjoy it as well.
