An azalea in our yard, after a spring shower, and in the sun (Steve Sickels)

My new photography website is up and running! Yay! It features galleries of some of my recent photos. With more photos to come.

For my first post, rather than focusing on my most recent images, I thought I’d step back in time and show one of my early digital SLR photos, from the spring of 2006. I don’t think it’s my best photo, technically, or in terms of composition — but in a way, it’s one of my favorites. For me, it “captures” the pleasure I take in photographing our world.

After an afternoon spring rain the sun came out, with water droplets sparkling like jewels on the azalea blossoms in our yard. I went out with my new DLSR and tripod, and had great fun experimenting with aperture settings for different depths of field. And just enjoying the beauty of the blossoms, the sparkling water droplets, and the day.

I’ve learned a lot about photography since 2006, but that same sense of exploration and pleasure in photographing our world is still at the heart of my picture taking.

I hope you enjoy my new website!
